The month started out on a tense note with inflation concerns governing sentiment. The escalation in inflation that commenced in the second week of March only got worse and by the end of April inflation hit a three and a half year high of 7.57 per cent (as of April 19).
RBI acted as a saviour to the market, as the central bank took cognizance of the supply side pressures on inflation and refrained from increasing its key lending rates. Although a hike in the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) of 75 basis points was announced during the month. Of this, so far only 25 basis points have come into effect. Owing to buoyancy in liquidity in the system the rise in CRR has so far not curtailed liquidity in the bond market. The yield on the 10 year benchmark bond fell 10 basis points over the month. This was only after it closed at an uncomfortable yield of 8.19 per cent on April 21.
Amongst the debt funds, the shorter tenure funds did much better, inspite of an improvement in yields at the far end of the yield curve. With a turnaround in the equity market, the Monthly Income Plans posted a good showing as well with only one fund posting negative returns. |
