| Equity Funds- Performance Update |
After a good showing in April, things turned sour again at the Indian bourses. Over the month of May the S&P Nifty lost (-) 5.73 per cent while the BSE Sensex lost (-) 5.04 per cent during the month.
The worst category performer amongst equity mutual funds where banking sector funds (excluding ETFs). The BSE Bankex lost (-) 12.53 per cent over the month. High inflation and a melt down in the bond market has meant that the mark-to-market losses of the banks will be on their way up. During the month SBI, the largest commercial bank, decided to temporarily restrict farm equipment loans owing to mounting NPA’s.
The Oil & Gas sector was also amongst the top losers, falling by (-) 9.64 per cent. As a result the Infrastructure specific theme funds saw a considerable loss, as most such funds maintain maximum assets in this sector. Rumors that government may ban the export of petroleum products by private refineries caused industry heavy weights like Reliance Industries to shed (-) 5.19 per cent in one trading session.
The sectors that did manage to stay in the positive territory were BSE Healthcare, Metal and IT. As a result the mutual funds dedicated to these sectors were the best performers. Owing to the poor performance of the Indian Equity market Viz. its global peers, the global category of mutual funds looked relatively better than the average diversified domestic equity fund. Amongst the equity diversified funds only three funds managed to stay in the green, while not a single tax planning fund could manage to stay afloat over the month.
We have considered only open-ended growth schemes in the various categories mentioned here.
